Government Website Hosting Service from DICT’s iGovPhil Program

The establishment of the Government Website Hosting Service (GWHS) under the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) ensures the government’s internet presence 24-hours a day, seven days a week (24/7), under all foreseeable conditions. Please read the full article here.

Furthermore, government websites are “housed under one roof,” allowing more efficient management and faster response to security issues. View the details here.

Likewise, according to Administrative Order (AO) number 39, the GWHS shall be for hosting the websites of National Government Agencies (NGAs), Government Financial Institutions (GFIs), and Government-Owned or Controlled Corporations (GOCC), including sites of inter-agency collaborations, programs, and projects. For Local Government Units, and other autonomous branches of the government, hosting shall be encouraged at the instance of the above – mentioned government entities. Please check out the full AO here.

To clarify the list of services under the GWHS, consider this simple explanation first.

There are things we need to publish a website online. Firstly is the domain name. For the GWHS, domain name ends with the top-level domain “.gov” (government) and the country code domain extension “.ph” (Philippines). An example here is dict.gov.ph.

Secondly, is the web space for your website, which is technically the website host. The website host provider also maintains the technologies and services needed for your website to be remotely accessible over the Internet.

Finally, the cyberspace is a worldwide network of computers. Each computer connected to the Internet has a unique address, known as the IP address. For example, the domain name ictforthepeople.com might also correspond to the IP address 166.62.28.146. It is the DNS service that translates the name ictforthepeople.com, for instance, to its equivalent IP address.
